Manuel Gutiérrez va obtenir el grau de Doctor en Química Analítica per la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona l'any 2008. La seva tesi estava dedicada a l'aplicació de llengües electrònica potenciomètriques en agricultura, medi ambient i monitorització clínica. Des del 2008 ha treballat en el Grup de Transductors Químics de l'Institut de Microelectrònica de Barcelona IMB-CNM (CSIC) i obtingut una beca "Juan de la Cierva" el 2010. A l'IMB-CNM (CSIC) ha continuat amb les línies d'investigació en matrius de sensors i llengües electròniques. També està interessat en el disseny i desenvolupament de nanocompostos per aplicacions sensores.
